| Extreme Recycling at Subaru -Denise Coogan,REM, CHMM Manager, Safety and Environmental Compliance Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. |
||
| "Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle" is the mantra of Subaru's sole U.S. auto manufacturing plant in Lafayette, Indiana, which produces up to 200,000 cars per year, including half of the Subaru Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca cars sold in the U.S. The plant set a "green" standard in 2004 when it became the first "zero landfill" auto factory in the U.S. -fully 99 percent of waste from the plant is recycled . Cardboard/paper and polystyrene/other plastics were likewise recycled to the tune of roughly 1,500 and 190 tons, respectively. More than 31,000 mature trees were saved from the chainsaw thanks to recycling nearly 1,000 tons of wood from pallets and the like. And almost 11,000,000 gallons of water were saved thanks to Subaru's intelligent use of existing materials. Come find out about the operational decisions, culture, and benefits that have accrued from Subaru's unflinching focus on environmental stewardship. | ||
